They laughed at me. Not out loud, but you could tell they were laughing. I know why people wouldn’t share a lane with me at the pool. I was afraid I’d hit them, too.  I know people waited for me on group runs because they felt sorry for me. I don't need their pity. And the bike… let’s not even go there. Now I’m here at the start line and that’s what counts. I’m here looking through what seems like a forest of black tree trunks with bright orange caps, swinging their branches from side to side. The water looks SO dark and that buoy in the distance…well, is it supposed to be that far away? Maybe they were right to laugh at me. Maybe I have no right to be here. No, NO!  I’ve come a long way and have only just begun. Because today I will cross that finish line and be the last one laughing.
